Children's Books Basic Resources:

The Purple Crayon Blog March 2010

Recently I gave a one-hour presentation on children's book publishing at the "Business of Pet Writing Conference," held in New York City during the Westminster Kennel Club dog show. It's quite a challenge to have to cover all of the essentials in one hour, but I did my best, and also pointed the writers in attendance to key resources by giving them a handout with recommended websites, books, and pages on my site. I'm reproducing this list here, in three parts. This part has the websites.

Booklist: This magazine is put out by the American Library Association, and reviews many children's books. It's a good place to read up on the latest titles. The website includes free sample materials, and you can sign up for a free 30-day trial of their online review database.

Cooperative Children's Book Center
: The CCBC publishes good lists of recommended books in a variety of areas on their website.

I.N.K.: Interesting Nonfiction for Kids: INK is a group blog covering a wide range of topics related to children's nonfiction. A great resource for anyone interested in writing nonfiction.

Jacketflap
: A networking site focused on creators of children's books, Jacketflap also has a lot of information about publishers and their books.

Kid Magazine Writers: If you want to write for children's magazines, this is the place to start.

Publishers Weekly: PW is the weekly magazine of the publishing industry. You can find many articles on their site, read reviews, and sign up for a free daily email newsletter.

The SCBWI: The Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators is the national organization those who write and illustrate books for children. They have a newsletter, a useful website, freebies for members, and local conferences all over the country.

Verla Kay's Children's Writers and Illustrators Message Board: This is the best discussion board for children's writers and illustrators, more active than the SCBWI's, well moderated, populated by published folks as well as beginners, and covering a wide range of topics.

Comments or suggestions are welcome.
