All of these follow the adventures of Harold as he draws himself into and out of difficulties with his purple crayon.
You will also find some new Harold adventures based on the cartoons on HBO Family. They may be charming, but they are not by
Crockett Johnson.
Other books by Crockett Johnson:
- Now available in its original form for the first time: Magic Beach, which Johnson wrote at Ursula Nordstrom's request, but which was not published by Harper and Row. Philip Nel found the original text and sketch dummy and Front Street has published it as is. It's the story of two children playing on a marvelous beach--when they write a word on the sand, that thing appears.
- Crockett Johnson also wrote and illustrated Ellen's Lion: For older readers, and now back in print (hooray!), this is a series of stories about a little girl and her toy lion, who in her mind is very much alive.
- And he illustrated Ruth Krauss' The Carrot Seed, as much a classic as the Harold stories are.
You can look for all of these at your local library or independent bookstore; several of the Harold books are available in paperback. HarperCollins, their publisher, is reissuing them in a larger format with jazzed-up cover art. I prefer the originals but it's nice to see that the books remain popular.
I've always loved the Harold books, and that's only partly because my name is Harold. That's why when I was creating this web site, I chose the purple crayon theme as a tribute.
